Heat Pump Selection Service
Goldfinch Energy specializes in helping homeowners chose a heating system that reduces their home’s carbon emissions. We work with you to design a system that is right-sized for your home, meets your goals, and fits within your budget. Our new partnership with Building Up, enables us to offer end-to-end support from evaluating your home’s readiness for a heat pump to installing equipment.
Canadian homeowners are choosing heat pumps
HVAC companies are becoming more familiar with heat pumps. However, picking a heat pump is different than a gas furnace and AC which is why it’s important to ensure that your heat pump is right-sized for both heating and cooling.
Ensure your heat pump is perfectly suited for your needs
We provide custom solutions that suit your home, your budget and your carbon reduction goals. There are many factors to consider when getting your home heating off gas. We simplify the technical aspects and connect you with trusted HVAC contractors to help you pick the best option for your home.
Whether you are interested in a fully-electric or a hybrid system, we can help you consider the options before bringing in contractors. To determine which option is best we look at:
The heating and cooling requirements of your home.
We will perform a Goldfinch Energy Assessment as a starting point and will use a software which is certified by HVAC Designers of Canada to determine the heat loss and heat gain of your home following the industry standard CSA F-280 process.
If improvements to your home are needed in order to bring down the heating requirements, we can help you understand which upgrades make sense to take on.
Estimated costs to install different types, sizes and brands of heat pumps
The annual heating costs (and carbon emissions) of various heat pumps that could work in your home
Goldfinch Energy has partnered with Building Up to extend our service by providing equipment installation. You are welcome to work with any installer of your choosing but if desired, we can facilitate the process by including the Building Up team in the following way at no additional charge:
Goldfinch’s Sarah Grant will visit your home to provide a quote including:
Measurement of the capacity of your ductwork by measuring the physical size of your ductwork and conducting an airflow test using the TruFlow grid to determine airflow and static pressure.
Assessment of the capacity of your electrical panel and the actual peak load electrical use of your home (note - you don’t always need to upgrade to 200 Amps)
Follow-up with a quote for equipment that can be installed in your home.
Building Up’s HVAC installation team will complete the installation in your home.
Sarah Grant will be available to help ensure the process goes smoothly.
Why Right-Sizing a Heat Pump is Important
Undersized heat pumps are becoming quite common as contractors feel more comfortable matching the heat pump size to an existing air conditioner.
An undersized heat pump with a gas furnace back-up will result in higher greenhouse gas emissions as the gas furnace will be used more frequently.
An undersized heat pump with electric auxiliary back-up can result in higher bills as the electric auxiliary heating can become quite costly to operate if it’s needed too often.
Oversized heat pumps are also an issue and can result in noise, higher installation costs and larger pieces of equipment.
Larger heat pumps have larger fans to blow more air through the ductwork. This can cause noise (if the fan is trying to blow more air than the ductwork can handle) which, over time, can also result in equipment failure sooner than is ideal.
Oversized electrical auxiliary heating can result in costly, unnecessary electrical upgrades.
“Goldfinch Energy made our journey to reduce our carbon footprint easier than we expected. The centrepiece of our home’s roadmap was our heat pump, which was a total game changer, and the installation was seamless. Achieving and surpassing our objectives was easily done knowing that Goldfinch had our backs every step of the way.”

Ductless heat pumps are good for homes that don’t have ductwork or when you need different temperatures in different rooms
Costs
Heat Pump Selection Service: $450*
This is for homeowners who need help figuring out which heat pump is right for them and getting connected with heat pump installers that won’t talk them into another gas furnace.
*A surcharge of $150 will be applied for homes that are more than 3,000 sq. ft. (this will be measured during the assessment)
The above pricing does not qualify a home for rebates or loans. At this time, rebates for heat pumps are available through the Home Renovation Savings Heat Pump program and can be claimed by working directly with an installer.
