Hot and Cold Rooms

Rooms that are too hot or too cold can be transformed if you get the right diagnosis

Homeowners often tell us windows or insulation are their problem but we find surprises

Goldfinch was called in to help some parents who were about to gut their daughter’s too cold room and add insulation to the walls. We brought our air tightness tool, the blower door, to see what we could find. The blower door exaggerates drafts so we first checked the usual spots like baseboards, windows and closets but it didn’t add up. However when we checked the floor vent it was blasting in air from the outdoors. It turned out there was a major leak between the underside of the flooring and the top of the duct work. We’re so glad we found it because if they’d entirely rebuilt the walls that wouldn’t have fixed the problem at all. They had cold air shooting into the vent, cooling down heated air before it even entered the room. No wonder her room dropped to 9°C in the winter!

Ductwork

Another problem we commonly find is duct work that’s not evenly distributing heat. There are technological solutions to repairing and rebalancing your duct work and the outcome can be remarkable. As one of our clients told us:

“The duct sealing service was such a fantastic suggestion. If you remember one of my daughters bedrooms was too cold, the other hot. That issue is completely gone. Much more even heat throughout the house. I can hear the air moving in vents where I never heard it before.” - Janet
